When I bought a mixer, Rodec was the standard. Pioneer was mainly still a brand for Midi stuff and home-used CD players.

I bought a used MX18 (without the crossfader) and still use it at home.
Whenever I play somewhere I use a DJM800 though.

One thing seperates a Rodec from the rest and that's the sound.
IMO RODECs have the highest and lowest frequencies.
Never heard the same thing on a Vestax/Pioneer/Gemini/Synq/Ecler... .

I never ever heard a UK Dj having to play on a rodec in a club instead of a DJM or similar go 'w00t a Rodec 180! So cool!' for instance (some even refuse so I had to pull out my own ecler).

About 15 years ago, before the Pioneer hype, nearly every US and UK deejay asked for a Rodec.

Jumping on the rodec vs pio :

seeing the modern pioneer club mixers use AD conversion I can't see how these types of mixers could ever reach the soundquality (and by that I mean true representation of what is on the medium, not necesairily "sounding nicer" ) of a mixer that doesn't convert (and thus dither) the sound.

I also should add that while Rodec offers 4 channel mixers with ALL the fancy shit (including balanced outputs, 2x XLR etc ) for less then 1000 euro
Pioneer only starts offering mixers with these kinds of options starting around 1500 euro.

That 500 euro extra = the fancy leds, effects you'll never use, 'pioneer' branding, getting your analog sound converted to digital, so u can use the internal DSP effect crap on it.
U can get a pretty sweet external effects controller for 500€!

Pioneer Europe today unveils its new professional-grade mixer the DJM-800. Pure fidelity is delivered by the hi-end 96kHz/24 bit A/D converter that’s complemented by 61 assignable MIDI control channels and a landmark innovation, ‘Harmonic Mixing’ capability – that detects a track’s key and automatically aligns it to the closest true key, removing inaccuracies created when adjusting the pitch. With digital connectivity, a large bright dot matrix display and a wide a range of high quality effects, the DJM-800 enables DJs to perfect pristine mixing.

Hell why'd you want to do that with a mixer?

+ imo with such kinds of option & extra's, there's bound to be stuff malfunctioning after < 2 years of good usage, stuff that might be expensive / impossible to replace.

NOT saying pioneers are bad mixers. I've mixed a few sessions on various pioneers & never really had any issues with them (except for the steep learning curve on all the controls & buttons :teeth: ) nor any remarks on the audible quality. heck any speakers I can afford will fuck up the general quality way more then the signal path of the mixer.

Lastly @ Jemenfish about blowing up systems : you can destroy gear & blow up speakers with ANY mixing desk.

AFAIK the venue /soundsystem owner will usually be in controll of the most important amplification step. He blew up his system himself by turning up the volume on the main amps too high and/or not have a limiter. a DJ should NEVER be able to blow up a system if you have it properly set up.
Also the balanced output only enlarges your volume "range". It gives you the ability to drive the signal up a few dB more but it is not louder by a "fixed rate".
IE the fact that balanced outputs are louder only truely matters if you happen to plug one in to your system when the signal running trough it happens to be driven up to peak levels. Only truely ignorant ppl will plug in powered mixers to a major SS with all the faders & volume knobs open... I hope

PS: if I had to buy one myself it'd have to be an A&H. that's some sexy stuff right there!

This might be interesting for someone: On 2dehands.be there's a guy selling a mx180 for 250 neuros, also an mx180 mk3 can be yours for 400 neuros apparently, check http://www.2dehands.be/rodec-mx180-mk3- ... l?qq=rodec
If only I had the money (and the space)... :(

If I had the room to put one I wouldn't hesitate.
