Post opening a rodec mx180 to change the crossfader
yep!
service needed for my superb oldschool mixer...ive played a bit roughly on the cross and i gave him his final hit. after 15 years of use, its no surprise (in the jeughduis i used to play back then, they had to replace it every 6 months...). the nice thing is that a replacement cross costs only 24,99!

to avoid paying 15 euro for every quarter the guy spends replacing it, i want to do it myself if its possible...since the legend says everybody can fix a mx180, im not afraid. and since im going inside of it, im gonna replace a little switch too (the thing that says if the mic is recorded or not-completely useless, but its nicer if everything works :P-)

my question is : how do i open the box? from up or bottom?as a chest or by lifting the whole upper panel? a friend told me that i had to remove all knobs one by one then unscrewing the panel, but it seems very weird, totally illogical.

and extra points for the guy who can tell me if ironing is needed or not...

thanks!

lol! shit happends you know...its just basic maintenance, i was pretty sure i would have to do it after a short time since this mixer is 15 yo and those crossfaders are not very sturdy. it works very well without the cross btw, but i like to have a fully featured machine. i would also have some repairs to make if i had bought a vintage rolls-royce for nothing...

Yeah, you will have to... How else would you connect the crossfader wiring?

Rodec been making that mixer for over 20 years.
In that period they changed a lot on it, so we gonna need to know the model nr... & well screwing off the top panel is a good start to find out stuff :p

If you're too scared or wouldn't know which way to turn to unscrew, read on:

1. Find out your Mixer's year of manufacturing.
If its > 1986
Go to rodec.be
-> "blistered spare parts"

94 001 0069
Blistered Spare-Parts

Replacement Cross fader for all models since 1986 &
Original Series > MX-180 Original, BX-9 & BX-14

Picture clearly shows a plug on the spare part (and the correct part nr is visible too), so you're saved!

If its pre 1986 you're gonna have to open it up to find out what's inside, and you "might" have serious issues with finding the correct spare part...

However with a little skill it might be quite easy to adapt the wiring of the older crossfaders to work with a modern spare part, it might even be as easy as connecting a plug to the wiring, or changing the existing plug.
The board layout might have changed, but i'm sure the working principle of the crossfader will have stayed the same.

Also "how" broken is the fader?
if u think it's broken anyway, it's ALLWAYS a good idea to open it up & take a peek :D

First thing I ever did in electronics saved me 90 euro's on a replacement Xfader -> stanton SK2Fltd cross jammed up on me.
Was gonna buy the spare, but when I opened it up I saw that a part had broken off & it was easily fixable with 0.50 eurocent's worth of Locktite glue :p
Hell it was glued on in the first place...

well heres how its broken : at 1st the left side wasnt fading well when sliding there (you still heared like 75% of the channel to fade). then nothing happened unless pushing on/shaking the slider and finding a spot where the channel was silent. since its only to one channel, i tend to conclude theres something broken inside of the fader, not outside...

sounds like wear to me. Mechanical moving parts have been bent from heavy usage... get a new one, and try not to pull on it with full body weight / let drunk homies fuck around with it next time :p

SoOooOoo

the TOP & the back plate are one piece.

After disconnecting the power cord,
you're supposed to put it top down & unscrew the bottom plate. (+the 2 Xfder screws on the top and the XFader button)
Then, if it's the version > 1986, it should be pretty obvious how to replace the XF, seeing it'll be connected with a cable + plug to the main board.
plug & pl/ray.

Just found a site that has really nice pics of the old models...

http://www.meta-design.jp/modify_17.html

If you'd happen to have one of those & feel overwhelmed I'd be happy to help you replacing that switch :p
Judging by the pics on that site the old boards have shitloads of workspace.
Hell that is pure ART!

Check the industrial quality relay (used in power circuit i'm guessing).
That's some lovely oldskool shit right there.

nice, those pics really help me!
the cross should not be a problem. however, for the switch, if that needs unsoldering-resoldering, im not sure to replace it finally.

strange mixer on the pics, a whole channel without anything!
