sidechain: add standard ableton live compressor to your channel, click the little knob with the triangle on it next to the on/off switch. In the extra menu that comes up, click sidechain and select what to use as input for the sidechain

thanks for the tips: I was aware of how to use the sidechaining :) but what are the standards in sidechaining concerning gain, dry/wet, and in the threshold: attack, release and ratio to get a decent sound. what input should I use? :)
I'll check out the raiden tips asap

for the input take whatever sound you want the channel that the compressor is on to lower in volume whenever the other sound plays.

it's all about how you want it to sound like..
keep twisting the knobs untill you have the sound you are aiming for.. listen!
I know it is most likely the most "old" hint, but it's still the main one!
Numbers come in handy, but they don't count for every sound!

I'm aware of how I want things to sound but it should also work on a proper soundsystem

I use the gate module for sidechaining, had 'flip' button so u can easily switch between peaking and dipping

altho I find sidechaining a little bitch, mostly when I want to use it for letting kicks & snares cut trough a sub or bassline they start to stutter, very hard to get that precise (hotspot) at which the soundlevel dips only a little bit

make your attack a bit longer, and raise release as well, that way the effect is not as pronounced. and if you can set compression level, make it 2:1, 4:1 max.

The way I get those parameters right for my compression (for ex. with a kickdrum) is by opening my kickdrum in some kind of editor (I use edison in fl studio) and then I check at how many milliseconds the peak in that kickdrum is and then I adapt the parameters of the attack and release to those numbers then u can choose at how many db you want your treshold (I mostly adapt it to the general volume of my track)..
the hardest part (imo) is getting your ratio right, I think you need a really propper soundsystem to get it right..
I use this technique for a few genres (jungle, techno, hardcore, breackcore) and it works the same way in every genre imo..

I hope this was at least a little bit helpful :)
