Post Audacity.. Trying to record a mix
Hello everyone,

i'vebeen driving myself mad for the past thirty minutes trying to record a mix using audacity. I used Blaze media pro before, but the trial time ran out so I tried this program.

I read some tutorials but most of them show how to make a podcast or use effects and bollocks like that. I just want to record a mix. Can't be so hard, now can it? Sure can!

Ok, so i jammed in my cable in the 'record' thingie (red & white) and shoved the other end (jack) into my friends laptop. First question: which port do I use? Pretty sure it shouldn't be microphone.. I got headphones and then another one.

Ok, so I switched from mono to stereo in audacity settings.. In the record section I cannot select 'line-in' or something similar.. Only 'microsoft geluidstoewijzing-input' or 'realtek HD audio input' .

I selected 'stereo mix' instead of microphone.

I play a record and press record. Nothing happens..

Someone who knows how to work with this program please help me out as I am getting desperate here. How hard can it be to record a mix? Thousands of people do it, yet I seem to be stupid enough not to be able to

Must be the exams ruining my brain.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah I already chose 'save as: mix' or something.. The three possible jack entrances in this laptop are headphones, microphone and then one that starts playing the music on the record really loud if i just plug it in without even pressing record. Dunno if that helps to analyse the problem and find me a solution.

Tons of people on here who post their mixes, there must be someone who can help me out or advise me another program with which to record..

It's a pretty good laptop, it's an ecler mixer, technics... Don't see what the problem in hardware might be. So I'm guessing it's the settings or so?

Tried it, and it is indeed the only way to actually record something... But when I listen to it it sounds distorted (like recording music at a loud party using your cellphone or something, crackling bass noise etc..)

I tried putting the 'ingangsvolume' and 'uitgangsvolume' to zero, but it stays the same when recording.. Any tips?

Not the mic & not the headphones, yeah the mic works but when you talk you will hear your voice... There should be a Line IN you put your cable in there. Then you chose above in audacity line in & that should be it...

Most of the computers have 2 Line In's, one in the front and one behind, did you tried both if your pc has both inputs?

I already read that.. Seeing as there is only one port left apart from the headphones and microphone one, that should be the line-in huh?
Well if I plug the jack in there and play the record, the 'sound bars' don't fill up, but the record gets played through the boxes of the laptop really loud.

Note that I cannot select line-in of some sort in 'voorkeuren, opnemen, apparaat'. I can only select Realtek HD audio input or microsoft-geluidstoewijzing-input. And seeing as I read on a tutorial on wikipedia that you should select the realtek one, that's what I did. (Although the tutorial sais 'Line-in Realtek audio...'.

I have the same problem with my laptop (Sony Vaio) now too.
I don't have a line-in (only mic and line-out) and when I put my jack in the mic input it sounds really distorted.
I tried numerous things to take the distortion away but doesn't work...

but... with my sister's laptop (who has an actual line-in) everything works out just fine (same Audacity settings etc)

/edit/
I guess the mic input can't handle the music, though there must be some way around. I'm really gutted about it 'cause this laptop cost me way too much to not be able to record a mix!

And what might those settings be? Did you select something like 'line-in' in the opnemen-apparaat selection preferences thing?

:DIE!: Audacity & laptops & line-in & recording mixes !!!!!
