Audacity is doing the tick for me for a while.
Nice and easy to use program.

don't take this the wrong way, but I wouldn't yet break my head on searching after recording software if I were you, as it will take lots of time and practice before you'll be able to mix decent... so just make sure you don't overrush yourself in it :)
I use something called audiograbber, it's free and easy to use

Hearing yourself on a recording is always different and let's you hear your mistakes way better. Imo after a week you already should start recording.

Yep, when I re-listen my recorded mixes I hear much more detail and I hear where things went wrong much better then when I'm doing it live. Possibly because the sound is cleaner when hearing it through decent headphones than when there are speakers involved that might not be so good, + when mixing there are a lot of other things to pay attention to that simply aren't there when you're listening to the recording.
